DIY Rustic Taper Candle Holder – Made From a Tree Trunk
Looking for a cozy DIY rustic taper candle holder idea? Learn how I turned a forgotten tree trunk and an old chandelier into a handmade outdoor decor piece.

It started with a mess.
You know the kind — garden clippings everywhere, half-finished projects staring at you from the corner, and one stubborn tree trunk too solid for the shredder. We had just removed a big bush (or maybe a small tree — depends on who you ask) from one corner of the garden. Most of it was chopped, shredded, and carted away. But that trunk? Too heavy. Also too pretty. Too full of potential to toss.
So I rolled it into a corner and forgot about it.
For months.

Until one rainy afternoon when I was down in the basement and stumbled upon another forgotten friend — a brass chandelier I’d painted white many moons ago. I’d meant for it to hang in my craft room. Never finished. Found another chandelier later. This one just… sat there.
And suddenly it clicked.
Tree trunk.
Chandelier.
Both abandoned, both waiting for their second act.

That’s how my DIY rustic taper candle holder came to life — an upcycled, handmade piece of outdoor decor that still makes me smile every time I see it flickering on our garden table.
The Inspiration Behind My Repurposed Tree Trunk Candle Holder
I’ve always loved giving forgotten things a new story. The scratches, the chipped paint — they’re part of the charm. So when I saw those chandelier arms, shaped like delicate flowers, I knew exactly what to do. I unscrewed them carefully (paint flaking and all — no regrets there), cleaned up the old tree trunk so it could sit flat, and attached the flower-shaped holders right into the wood.
It wasn’t perfect.
Which, honestly, made it perfect.

I melted a little candle wax to glue in the taper candles — simple, rustic, and slightly uneven. Exactly the kind of handmade imperfection that feels real.

A Touch of Rustic Charm for Your Garden Table
This repurposed tree trunk candle holder has become one of my favorite pieces of outdoor decor. When we host friends on the terrace, it always sparks conversation. The natural wood, the aged metal, the soft glow of taper candles — it’s all wonderfully imperfect.
If I lived near the sea, maybe I’d have done it with driftwood. But this? This piece of garden waste turned centerpiece feels perfectly me.
There’s something grounding about it — using what’s already around you, working with your hands, making something beautiful out of what might have been thrown away.
That’s the heart of upcycling. The joy of recycling. The quiet pride of homemade things that tell a story.

How to Make Your Own DIY Rustic Taper Candle Holder
Want to try it yourself? Here’s the simple version:
- Find a solid piece of wood — a tree trunk, a branch, or even driftwood.
- Clean and flatten the bottom so it sits steady.
- Attach small metal candle cups (I used parts from an old chandelier).
- Melt a bit of candle wax to secure your taper candles in place.
- Style it as a natural centerpiece on your garden table, mantle, or outdoor bar.
It’s a quick weekend project — and the best part? It costs almost nothing.
You’ll have a handmade, rustic candle holder that looks like something straight out of a cozy countryside cabin.

What My Tree Trunk Upcycle Taught me
Here’s the thing: I didn’t know I was making a DIY rustic taper candle holder when I saved that stump. Or when I painted that chandelier. Sometimes creativity hides in plain sight — waiting until two forgotten projects meet.
Oh, and that chandelier?
The rest of it was repurposed too. I turned it into a chandelier bird feeder! Too cute!
So next time you see an unfinished object in your corner (I call them “UFOs” — unfinished objects), look twice. It might just be your next favorite upcycled decor piece.
Because sometimes, the best projects aren’t planned. They’re discovered.

I love it. It makes a gorgeous table centre piece xxx
What a fantastic way to use two disparate items. I might just look for a piece of driftwood next time I walk along the beach.

Cool is right! That candle holder rocks! I love how you are knocking the projects out right now.
I really need to do a couple of smaller projects just to feel like I've accomplished something. Everything I'm doing right now is either maintenance, getting ready for winter or big projects that take a reeeally long time. I'll be staying tuned…loving your posts in this series.
