How to Decorate a Small Living Room For Christmas (No Tree Needed!)

If you live in a small home or apartment, you might wonder how to decorate for Christmas without your space feeling cramped. I’ve been there — my living-dining area is tiny by most standards, and while I love it, my first few Christmases with a big tree made the room feel much smaller than it really is.
This year, I decided to take a different approach: simple, space-saving Christmas decorations that still bring all the holiday charm without taking over my living room.

Decorating for Christmas Without a Tree
Yes, you can absolutely create a festive, cozy atmosphere without a big Christmas tree. My trick this year was to buy a mini Christmas tree and use a large oriental vase filled with branches instead. It’s elegant, takes up very little space, and still lets me hang some of my favorite ornaments.
I added my old IKEA paper star light, which casts a warm glow across the room — a nostalgic nod to the paper star lamp from my childhood. Together, these small touches create that magical Christmas feeling without crowding the room.

Cozy and Simple Living Room Christmas Decor
My Christmas living room decor has a slightly oriental-meets-Scandinavian vibe this year, so I leaned into that with the Moroccan and Turkish-inspired accents. A few metallic ornaments, a faux Christmas wreath, and a couple of glass lanterns filled with bottle brush trees made the whole look come together.
My faux Christmas wreath used to be my go-to outdoor wreath. I used it many times on my front door and even as part of a centerpiece (find lots of ideas for outdoor Christmas decorations here). In fact those little stars where from the Christmas when I went rustic and natural. I never took them off. I still like them so they could stay another year. The deer head was last years new addition. I simply stuck it in the wreath and gave him his own Christmas charms.Â
The wreath is hanging over a little side table. I am missing a mantel dearly at this time of the year. Decorating my mantel for Christmas was my favorite part. I’ll just have to do with a little tabletop decorating and dream of mantel decorations somewhere  in my future..

On my little side table, I created a tiny winter scene with faux snow, a small deer, and a vintage car ornament in glass candle holders. These mini Christmas vignettes are perfect for small spaces: festive, easy to put together, and full of personality.
DIY Christmas Decoration Ideas for Small Spaces
If you’re short on space, here are a few easy DIY Christmas decoration ideas I swear by:
- Use branches or twigs in a vase instead of a full tree — it saves space but still feels festive.
- Decorate lanterns, jars, or glass domes with mini trees, snow, and lights.
- Hang a Christmas wreath indoors — above a console table, mirror, or even your bed.
- Add soft lighting: string lights, star lamps, or candles instantly create warmth.
- Keep a neutral color palette for a calm, cozy atmosphere that doesn’t overwhelm a small room.

A White Christmas — Indoors
Here in the Low Lands, we rarely get a white Christmas. It’s usually grey, wet, and gloomy outside. But inside, I can create my own white Christmas atmosphere with lights, textures, and simple decor.
Fairy lights in the windows, glowing lanterns, and my trusty paper star lamp make the evenings feel magical. When I bike home through dark streets lit up with twinkling lights, it reminds me that this season is truly about celebrating light and warmth.

Keep It Simple — and Make Space for What You Love
Over the years, I’ve collected quite a few Christmas decorations — maybe too many. So I made myself a rule: the number of crates may not grow, and if something new comes in, something old must go.
This helps keep my decorations meaningful. Every piece I use now – from the deer head in my wreath to the little stars I’ve had for years – tells a story. And that’s what makes my home feel festive, even without a big tree.
On my window sill, I have a little old project making a comeback too. Remember these wooden houses? They where the stars in my star filled Christmas mantel. I used them once more this year and then I think I will part with them forever. You have to let go of some Christmas decorations, don’t you….

Decorating a small living room for Christmas doesn’t mean sacrificing the magic. With a few simple, easy, and space-saving decorations, you can create a warm and inviting holiday home that feels cozy and personal.
Whether it’s a vase with ornaments, a glowing star light, or a few DIY winter scenes, it’s the little details that make Christmas feel special. So light a candle, hang your favorite ornaments, and enjoy your beautifully decorated — and clutter-free — holiday home.
