DIY Fall Lantern Decor (easy, fast and cheap ideas)
DIY fall lantern decor is the perfect way to easily and quickly decorate for autumn. Lanterns are such easy accessories for your fall decor. You only have to choose a lantern and then fill it with lantern fillers that bring in the season. Adding a fall lantern topper is also a wonderful idea.

How to Decorate Lanterns for Fall
I love using lanterns to decorate my home! They offer a great way to add some light to my decor, add height to a centerpiece and bring a homely atmosphere.
Decorating with a lantern is as simple as adding one or more candles inside the lantern or alternatively using the lantern as a vase and filling her up with fillers.
Lanterns are a great way to change up your decor quickly and easily. Since easy fall decor is my favorite fall decor, I love what lanterns can do. Simply choose lantern fillers that are appropriate for the time of year, and you’ll have the perfect seasonal decor in no time.

I decorated one little corner in my home with a fall lantern, and then I couldn’t stop and started to add more beautiful fall lantern decor all over my little temporary apartment. I had so much fun! Let me show you all the fall lantern decorations I came up with.
But before I show you how to decorate a lantern for fall and give you heaps of ideas for lantern fillers and fall lantern centerpieces, I want to let you know that you can find a heap of home decorating ideas at the end of this post. The Thrifty Style Team has once more been busy coming up with inexpensive but beautiful DIY home decor ideas.

In the living room, I made a super quick and easy centerpiece by simply displaying a collection of lanterns and candle sticks. The rattan placemat grounds the eclectic collection and adds an extra touch of fall to this arrangement.
I think it is funny how well all these lanterns work together. The oriental decorative lantern is completely different from the traditional square farmhouse lantern, but they share their silver color, and it works.
DIY Fall Lantern Decor

Of course, even though it is so tempting to use a lantern in a table centerpiece, it is good to remember that you can always hang a lantern too.
On these wall hooks, I added some quick fall-ish accessories like a scarf, a wreath, and a wood bead garland. And, of course, I added a little lantern.
The mini antlers make great fillers for this vintage military lantern. They add just the right kind of rustic feel and are a subtle and simple fall touch.
The small open lantern with a tealight adds just that extra little bit of ambient lighting that this dark fall season needs.
When hanging a lantern it can be difficult to make them hang straight. With a piece of ribbon tied to the top you can make it hang down the right way more easily.

Fall Lantern Filler Ideas
The fun thing about a lantern is, of course, that you can fill her up with all kinds of seasonal thingamajigs to add a little bit of fall flair in the easiest of ways. And simply replace them with different items as the seasons change.
Let me give you some great ideas for fall fillers to put inside of your lantern
- pillar candles or battery-powered candles
- pine cones
- mini pumpkins, or small gourds
- wine corks
- fall leaves
- nuts
- acorns, chestnuts
- decorative balls (wrapped with twine or feathers)
- fall feathers
- dried or faux flower heads
- twinkly lights
Really you can put anything into a plain lantern, and it will look good. Lanterns are magical like that (just like cloches, anything looks good under a cloche too). Just choose the seasonal elements that fit your style and that you have on hand or can collect for free outside, and you are good to go.

One necessary little safety warning, though. If you combine lantern fillers with real candles, always ensure there is no fire hazard. Make sure the bottom of the candle won’t get too hot by placing it in a little container and keeping the flame of the candle far away from any flammable materials.
I often use tealights in small clear glass candle holders for situations like this (just like I did with my Beach Lanterns. Or I use a battery-operated candle. That works too.

Fall Lantern Topper Ideas
It is a popular idea to add a topper to a fall lantern. This could be as simple as a few flower heads (sunflowers come to mind) tied to the top, a nice cute bow (burlap would be perfect for fall), or a more elaborate fall lantern swag.
I didn’t have time, nor the patience, to make a nice decoration for the top of the lantern, but I am itching to try that look out too. So who knows, I might come back to you with one more fall lantern, this time sporting a nice lantern topper.

Easy Fall Lantern Centerpiece Idea
If you choose small items in your fall color scheme to fill up your lantern, you’ll have an instant focal point for any fall centerpiece. A tall lantern is a perfect way to add some much-needed height to any centerpiece.

This look is so easy to recreate. Two lanterns, a crate, some pumpkins, pinecones, and fall leaves from Dollar Tree.
Throw it all together, and you have an instant fall centerpiece that adds lots of ambiance and coziness and doesn’t take up a lot of space.
The tall lantern here has been filled with small gourds and a string of lights. I think this is the look of a traditional fall lantern? filled up with tiny fall vegetables in traditional colors. The smaller one has a real candle. Together they light up this little corner in my living room just perfectly.

I hope you enjoyed my collection of fall lantern decor ideas. I had a lot of fun putting it all together.
