Looking for a rustic Christmas craft idea? How about making a rustic Christmas garland from decorated wood slices and little natural decorations.

This rustic Christmas garland is so easy to make with wood slices you can find at the Dollar Store or in the Christmas craft isle of your craft store.

 You won’t believe how easy it is to make wood slice ornaments and turn them into a natural garland to hang in front of a window or use in your Christmas mantel decor.

The other day I spotted some lovely rustic wood slice ornaments in the Christmas section of our local hardware store. I loved the look of those. Especially their rustic, not perfect, character. I didn’t love the price tag attached.

I thought it would be fun to make them myself and save myself a whole lot of money. Luckily I found a bag of wood circles for a steal at the discount store, so it was a done deal. If you are not so lucky to find cheap wood slices you can always cut these yourself from a branch from your garden.

My wood chips were quite rustic indeed, but that was okay. I gathered up my tools and went to work. 

Drilling the holes was the easiest part. 

Next came the drawing. I am no good at drawing. Really I struggle even with making a symmetrical heart. 

But I went for it. 

My first batch was more or less a copy of the ones I saw at the hardware store.

The roughness of the wood – I hadn’t bothered sanding the chips down any further – made it hard to get clear lines with acrylic paint and a bruch.

So I was happy to reach for a big tip sharpie for the next batch (mostly the backs of my white painted chips).

Working with a pen allowed me to make more intricate designs like my snowflake and I could write text.

I decided that it might be fun to add a bit of color too. So I painted a few chips all white.

I hoped I could write on them with a red sharpie. Turned out that became more pink than red. Not what I was going for. So I reached for some scrapbook embellishments and my glitter glue. Problem solved.

Now that I had about twenty of these chips decorated on both sides I had to come up with a way to use them.

I decided to string them up with string and add some extra embellishments in between. And now I have a rustic Christmas garland.

I added all kinds of little things in between the wood chips, like washi tape flags, wooden stars from a handmade Christmas two years ago and beads from my stash (I found that beaded circle among my wooden beads, lucky find, I used it as it was). 

Some jingle bells were added and some bark hearts from the dollar store.

And now it is hanging in front of our French doors in the living room. It looks really cute, and it was hell to photograph. Remind me please, next year, not to make another project to hang in front of those doors. Photographing it took me almost as much time as I used to make it. 

But I really like how it looks to have something dangling and swinging in front of those doors……..
